Join us on Tuesday, March 18th for our SEAOG Spring Seminar: "A Deep Dive into IBC 2024 and ASCE 7-22". Breakfast and lunch are included in the registration fee. 6 PDH credit hours will be provided to participants completing the full-day seminar.

9:15 - 10:45am - ASCE 7-22 Seismic Updates by Emily Guglielmo, Martin/Martin
This session will provide a brief overview of ASCE 7-22 updates for seismic. Significant updates include the multi-period response spectrum, including a discussion on the effects to the local Atlanta region. Additional updates will include two-stage analysis updates, inclusion of flexible wall-rigid diaphragm provisions and a new force equation for non-structural components.

Emily Guglielmo, is a Principal at Martin/Martin, Inc. and leader of the San Francisco Bay Area office. She is Chair of the ASCE 7-28 Seismic Committee and is a voting member of the Wind and Main Committees. Emily is the chair of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) Code Advisory Committee. She has presented lectures on structural building code provisions nationally and internationally and was recognized with the Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award. Emily currently serves on the boards of the Charles Pankow Foundation, the NCSEA Foundation, and the AISC Education Foundation. She is the Past-President of the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and served as the President of NCSEA in 2020-2021.

11:00 - 11:30am - IBC 2024 GA Amendments by Stephen Richards, Uzun+Case
This session will cover the GA Amendments specific to IBC 2024.

Stephen Richards, P.E., S.E. is an Associate Principal at Uzun+Case and has worked on a diverse range of projects where he has a reputation for using his technical expertise to deliver creative and cost-effective solutions for clients. Within Uzun+Case, he contributes to the technical development of the firm’s standards and is passionate about nurturing the growth of emerging engineers. Stephen is also actively involved in the structural engineering community as a member of the NCEES Structural Exam Committee, the ASCE 7-28 Main Committee and Wind Load Subcommittee, and Secretary on the SEAOG Board of Directors.

Over lunch, the SEAOG Board of Directors will give an update on upcoming events and committee initiatives.
12:15 - 1:45pm - ASCE 7-22 Wind & Tornado Updates by John O’Brien, PES Structural Engineers
This session offers a detailed overview of the technical changes to the ASCE 7 wind load provisions between the 2016 and 2022 editions. The most notable update in the 2022 wind provisions is the inclusion of tornado load considerations for new construction. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the requirements and calculations for tornado loads. Practical examples will be provided to illustrate these new provisions.

John O’Brien, P.E., S.E. is an Associate and Director of Structural Engineering at PES Structural Engineers in Atlanta. John has extensive interest and experience in extreme loads on structures. He currently serves as the chair of the ASCE 7 chapter 29 task committee for wind loads on other structures and building appurtenances, member of the ASCE 7 tornado loads and wind loads on components and cladding task committees, chair of the NCSEA Wind Code Advisory Committee, and an associate member of the ASCE 7 seismic committee, serving on the functional recovery task committee. John has over 20 years of structural design experience, including the design of essential facilities, and a wide range of commercial and industrial facilities located in high hazard areas, and has led the evaluation and restoration of existing facilities impacted by floods, tornadoes and hurricanes.

This session will provide ASCE 7-22 Snow & Rain and IBC 2024 General Structural Updates.

John “Buddy” Showalter, P.E. is a senior staff engineer with the International Code Council (ICC) product development group. He develops technical resources and provides education in support of the structural provisions of the IBC and IRC. He has over 35 years of experience in the development and support of building codes and standards having spent 26 years with the American Wood Council. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Showalter has also been a member of the editorial board for STRUCTURE magazine for nearly 20 years.
